MY PHOTOGRAPHY JOURNEY

Updated: Jun 11, 2023

This is not a fashion blog post today, but I'd love to talk a bit about how I started in photography. I'd love to chat about my whole journey and why I love it so much.

Disclaimer: this is only about photography, not any other parts of my life.

This is me shooting at the most recent local street festival. I prefer being behind the camera, but I do not shy away from being in front. I seem to have a very versatile face and love to try new things and new ways to appear in an image. So exciting!

HOW DID MY LOVE OF PHOTOGRAPHY START?

The first memory I have of holding a film camera was when I was 8 years old.

I remember my sister got a yellow waterproof camera, the name eludes me.

And I remember saying I wanted one too. I never got my own until way later in life.

But my father owned a Nikomat film camera with an interchangeable lens.

I was mesmerized with it, even though my father only ever used it on Automatic settings. He never got into photography, but it was a blessing that I inherited it, and still own it now. As soon as I finished high school, I set out to become a professional photographer. But once I went to Hornsby Tafe to learn Black and White film photography in 1994, I was bitterly disappointed. I was expecting to be taught how to take good photos, but my teacher at the time was obsessed with the whole processing of film in the dark room. I felt I was not getting the type of education I needed so after a year I quit.

I am always trying new things out or even mundane things like a glass of milk on my kitchen bench and the shadow it makes. It's probably things that bore others but really excite me. The thing is, the things I like are not the things others like, and that's ok!

WHY I REGRET QUITTING AT A YOUNG AGE?

I had the feeling I would regret this decision, and to be completely honest and totally transparent what I'm going to say is that I really did regret it for many decades.

I love to shoot my animals so much, especially my kitties.

HOW I REDEAMED MYSELF:

I had the itch to start photography about 10 years ago, so I bought a really terrible DSLR, quality wise. But it was the thing that got me to play around with a large camera again, but I never got off the automatic settings for almost 5 years. Until I was fed up and decided to push myself into teaching myself to go full manual. I bombed out at first but got some really amazing help from an expert from Canon, and I thank goodness for him and everything I learnt since then. I felt a bit more confident once I practiced and then decided to get certified. And that's when I started getting awards for my photos.

I kept taking images of the sunset and my environment constantly. And it still fascinates me now and I love to see the results months later.

DO I REGRET GOING BACK TO PHOTOGRAPHY?

No, but I do regret doing it so late in life and waiting this long to get back into it.

I have had this habit for a long time of taking photos everywhere and anywhere I go.

And of things that look remotely interesting to me like these beautiful flowers in the park.

MY ADVICE TO NEW PHOTOGRAPHERS:

Do what you love to do and keep at it. And upgrading your equipment does make a difference. No need to go for high-end really expensive ones but a decent camera body and a good lens or two is definitely what you need. And a nice backpack to put all your gear in when you travel or on a job is essential in my eyes.

This is one of my favourite types of photos to take as I am obsessed with hats and things that are stacked and look so interesting in a group. This one was taken at the local field days.

WHAT IS MY NEXT MOVE IN PHOTOGRAPHY?

I really do not know, basically wherever the wind blows there I will go.

I honestly thought after over 30 years of snapping I would be sick of it by now, but I have been pleasantly surprised at my interest. I feel like I am still learning every single day new things about it and discover new ways to shoot, new things to shoot and get inspired by everything around me all the time.
