HATS

Updated: Feb 3, 2023

WHAT TYPES OF HATS TO WEAR?

There are so many types of hats you can wear these are the four main types I will get into today. You can try on many more in the shops and you can do your own research to find even more interesting ones. But for today I will get into these, and maybe do a part two in another post.

1) COWGIRL HATS:

This hat was and still is associated with cattle farmers on the land in Australia and in the US. Now it is worn by many people around the world as a fashion statement.

Especially for those who live in country towns. This is a great piece to have for the harsh summer sun in places where the temperature is dry and humid.

Hats in general are excellent for bad hair days.

2) FEDORA HATS:

Fedora Hats were first seen as a feminine hat with masculine undertones in 1883, inspired by a drama called “Fédora,” created by the French playwright Victorien Sardou. Now warn by many women with great style and elegance.

3) STRAW HATS:

A straw hat is a wide-brimmed hat woven out of straw or straw-like synthetic materials. Straw hats are a type of sun hat designed to shade the head and face from direct sunlight but are also used in fashion as a decorative element or a uniform.

Straw hats have been worn in Africa and Asia since after the Middle Ages during the summer months and have changed little between the medieval times and today.

Types of straw hats:

  • Boater hat – a formal straw hat with a flat top and brim.

  • Buntal hat – a semi-formal or informal traditional straw hat from the Philippines made from buntal fiber.

  • Conical hat – the distinctive hat worn primarily by farmers in Southeast Asia

  • Panama hat – a fine and expensive hat made in Ecuador.

  • Sombrero Vueltiao - A straw hat with intricate patterns made from caña flecha by the Zenú people of Colombia.

  • Salakot – a traditional conical or pointed rounded hat made usually made from rattan from the Philippines. It can also be made from gourds, tortoiseshell, or other fibers and weaving materials.

4) SPORTS CAPS:

The baseball cap has been an integral part of the modern sports uniform since 1858, but wearing the hat outside the field wasn't socially acceptable until the late 1970s. The iconic brimmed silhouette has now evolved into a staple in most wardrobes.

WHEN TO WEAR A HAT?

You wear a hat when you feel good about yourself and if your outfit calls for it.

Don't use it as something to hide behind, it ruins the look and mood if you do.

The best outfit for a hat is the simple types of outfits like jeans, a white top and some cute sneakers or flat shoes or cowgirl boots. No need for too many other accessories, or other embellishments other than maybe some earrings and neutral make-up.

WHERE TO WEAR A HAT?

Like I said before, you can wear a hat anywhere you like, but some places I can suggest here are:

a) In a Country town

b) To a friend's barbeque

c) To an outdoor event

d) To a dressy event

e) To a wedding

f) To a funeral

g) To the beach

h) Many more places

i) Sports events

WHAT HAT SUITS YOUR STYLE?

This one is important to take into consideration. Always match your outfit with your hat.

So, if you are going to a sports event, then wear a sporty outfit and your sports cap with suit and match. Or the same for any other event.

HEAD SIZE:

One size does not fit all, in this instance. Hat sizes are measured by taking a soft tape measure and taking a reading of the circumference of the widest part of your head,

on your forehead. The average size would be around 56cm-58cm.

Anything less is smaller, or anything larger is in large size.

THE RIM:

The size of the rim is one of the most important part that contributes to the style you will choose. The larger the rim, the more protection you'll get from the sun.

The smaller the rim, the more fashionable it will be.

THE COLOUR:

This is the most personal one to you. This is another one that needs to suit your outfit, your style and your mood. The one thing I'd suggest is to get neutral colours so as to match with more outfits. If you do decide to get a bright colour, it should be that pop of colour your outfit needs. A good colour to buy is a bright blue, this is a fun one.

THE STYLE:

The style is again very personal to you and your wardrobe.

By now you will know what your style is and which hat you like.

If not, try every hat until you find the one you love. And stick to it.

Whatever you do, try a hat.

IF YOU LOVE HATS AS MUCH AS I DO, WHAT TO DO?

If you do love hats, you'll have a collection of them like I do. I sewed my first purple hat at the age of 12, it was the first thing I ever made, and I was addicted to them from even earlier on. I remember my mother buying me a sailor's hat at the age of 6.

Hats are not for everyone, but if you do enjoy them then don't stop

wearing them.

HATS APPROPRIATE! HATS AN ISSUE!

As you can see, there is a huge amount of information about hats and involve a few things to consider before buying or wearing one. So, enjoy doing your own research on hats and see if there is a style you have never tried before.

OTHER TYPES OF HATS:

HOW TO WEAR A HAT?

It's simple, you put it on your head with your hair down or you can do a cute plait in your hair or do a fancy low bun. Some examples below:

WHERE TO WEAR A HAT?

Everywhere and anywhere. There are very few places you cannot wear a hat.

But wearing a hat indoors is not usually recommended. You can either take it off or just don't wear a hat to places where you will be indoors, because you'll get helmet hair.

And who wants that?

TIP: Cock your hat to the side for a cool look & attitude and enjoy your day.
