TRENDS

WHAT ARE TRENDS?:

Trends are the types of clothes designed and manufactured for a season and are usually a fad. A fleeting idea that erupts and then suddenly dies. It is called 'fast fashion'. Something that many people buy into very quickly but then get sick of as there are too many people that own it, and then regret it, and then end up discarding it. This is why the big brands that have been around for many, many decades prefer 'slow fashion'. These are the classics that last the test of time. Classic pieces that cost a lot more, but can be worn for decades to come. Great quality at high prices that don't break on the first wear. Whereas trends tend to be of super low quality, made very fast in some sweatshop in a poorer country, and are of very, very cheap quality and shipped around the world fast for a quick buck. This is what overcrowds the landfills around the world. The manufacturing of fabrics, production of clothing and us tossing these beautiful clothes away, makes up for over 70% of the destruction of our earth. That, and the mass production of our food (mainly animal production), the production of plastics and our obsession of buying everything the media forces us to want, is making this destructive cycle never end. If something doesn't give, there will not be anything left in a few years.

SHOULD YOU FOLLOW TRENDS OR NOT?:

That's completely up to you and I'm not saying you should never follow trends or never buy these fashion pieces. No, what I'm saying is to be mindful with most of your wardrobe but add those trendy pieces as a fun addition to your wardrobe. I suggest, once you have sorted the majority of your wardrobe with all the essentials I have spoken about and these are the basics you need for it to function, then add a few fun trendy pieces per year to keep it fresh and up to date. This way you aren't just buying into trends and nothing ever matches. In the long run this will all make sense to you. And always remember which colour palette you are using and your body type. This will help you never buy useless clothes that just sit.

Trendy pieces that last longer than a season.

WHICH TRENDS ARE OUT NOW?:

As we are nearing winter (in the southern hemisphere), the best trends now are the cosy woollen teddy coats, thick tights and fun boots, as a casual look. For work, you can wear a nice thick A-line dress over thick stockings and a coat. And for special occasions, a warm and cute knee length skirt and a white top with cute heels.

WHAT MAKES A TREND LAST?:

Some trends end up staying around forever, but they are rare. One trend I have seen for many years is when people match their handbag with their shoes. This is a very classic look that has a very practical use and makes an outfit look cohesive. Another very classic garment is the camel coloured cashmere coat, this one has lasted the test of time. Or even the large brimmed black hat or the LBD, which stands for the 'Little Black Dress'.

Other trends become classics because a huge amount of the population loves a certain style, garment or accessory and they last generation after generation. Sometimes the specific thing is updated but the general gist of it is still around, for example the classic white shirt with a classic collar. Or stiletto heels, in many styles and colours. Trends that do last are because they are comfortable and look good at the same time. They are stylish and feminine and can be worn by all ages and go with all body types.

TIPS: To keep your wardrobe fresh and not stagnant, have a rule for yourself that once you buy one fashion piece, you get rid of one old piece. So 'one in, one out' is a good way to start off by getting the ball rolling. Do things with baby steps rather than a dramatic overhaul. And don't forget, all these rules apply to men.
