MY JOURNEY TO BECOME A FULLY QUALIFIED FLORIST:
HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?
About 15 years ago when my sister got married, I made her an arbor for the front of our parents' house where we all stood as a family to take photos. It was huge and beautiful with real foliage and real white roses all over and some ribbon.
I was already in love with the craft, but as usual did not take it seriously at first.
We also woke up at 3am on her wedding day to drive to the Sydney Markets to buy all the flowers we needed for the reception room, as we were going to decorate the whole space ourselves, except for the bridal table centerpiece and her bouquet (we weren't that game at the time to attempt them). Everyone who attended was amazed at what we did, and I must admit it was pretty spectacular. Similar to this arbour (google image).
WHEN DID I START TO PERSUE FLORISTRY AS AN OPTION?
Fast forward to 3 years ago when I attended a Statement of Attainment certificate for Floristry at Tafe full time for 6 weeks. I was hooked. I loved it and
thought to myself why didn't I do this as a career earlier on in life?
But then I thought floristry has no age limits, it's not about your youth or looks so it really doesn't matter what age you are. And anyway, I was doing it more for fun to have another creative endeavour under my belt, coz that's how I like to roll.
HOW DID I CONTINUE TO BE QUALIFIED?
So, about a year and a half ago I found another course in Tafe, this time it was online, for Floristry Certificate II, I thought it was strange to have a practical course online, but it actually works well for me as I already had the fundamentals under my belt. It felt easy breezy, and my teacher is a champion as she has made it so easy for us to learn. I'm so lucky. And since our class of 30 gets on so well and we love what we do and having such a patient teacher who is willing to answer all our crazy questions, she added us into her Certificate III class whereby the end of it you become fully qualified.
As I write this post (you may see it later on) I have 3 more months before I get my certificate and become fully qualified, which makes me super happy that I
have one more option under my belt. Not sure if I'll ever use it,
but I love that I have that option.
WHY DO YOU LOVE TO STUDY SO MUCH:
It's in my DNA to want to learn and upskill/upgrade myself and my skills all the time. I get so bored of life if I'm not learning something new. I have to do it for my sanity and need of a good challenge. The last certificate I did, in Art and Design, was the hardest thing I have gone through, but I'm so glad I got through it. It has already come in handy in so many ways. And that's why I feel like this floristry course is such a breeze for me,
even though others in class find it hard. There is a lot of theory and a lot of paperwork that comes with it, but to me, it's all research. How else will you learn something if you don't go into depth of everything it entails?
WHAT NEXT?
I'm not sure what is next with floristry, I will leave that up to the Universe to guide me.
If it is meant to be, it will be. Otherwise, I will keep making beautiful arrangements
for my home and for friends who deserve it. All I know is that my creativity flows any time I make something with flowers, and it feels beautiful to look at.
I'll keep you posted on my journey down the track.
Thanks for reading my latest blog post. Keep safe and I'll see you on the next one.
