WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? :
It is important to learn a few things about the colour wheel for a few reasons :
1) to know how colours are made.
2) to learn which colours suit each other or clash.
3) to learn why colour is so important in everything you do.
This is the foundation of fashion, the key to a fantastic and complete wardrobe.
In this blog you will be able to choose the colours that you want, even if you fit into one of the three main groups (warm, cool, neutral). This will give you a more rounded version of what colours can do.
The three primary colours are : red, blue and yellow. These three colours make up every colour you can imagine. By mixing them together or by adding black or white you get a whole new range of colours. So secondary colours are made from three combinations, they are : red and yellow to make orange, red and blue to make purple, and blue and yellow to make green. Tertiary colour are made by mixing the secondary colour further with primary colours. All of these can be mixed with white to create lighter shades, such as pastels and neutrals, or darker ones by adding black.
ANALOGOUS COLOURS :
Colours that are analogous to each other are the ones that sit right next to each other, for example : purple and blue, blue and green, green and yellow, yellow and orange, orange and red, or red and purple work in harmony with each other. Each couple has one colour in common, hence why they match. They are called analogous colours.
COMPLIMENTARY COLOURS :
These are also called the opposite colours.
It is useful to know which colours are opposite to each other so that when you make an outfit of one colour and you want a pop of colour that stands out, that you know how to do it. It's good to have a colour wheel printed out near your wardrobe so you can get inspired. And to see it in front of you to remind you, especially when you feel stuck .
The colour wheel is split into half, the warm tones and the cold. Usually the opposites come from : one from the warm side and one from the cold side. So, purple is the opposite to yellow. Blue is the opposite to orange. Green is the opposite to red. And so on.
These are called complimentary colours. Really they are the ones that most people avoid as they are not safe colours to wear, and if not done well, can look bad.
This method is also called Colour Blocking. Where you choose a colour on the top and a colour on the bottom, without any pattern or disruption. Many famous people do this look like : Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez, Victoria Beckham, Meghan Markle, Sia and many, many more. I would recommend everyone try it at least once from the clothes they already own. Just choose two colours you think look good together and then pair them together. You never know, you might find an outfit you would have never found before.
TIP : Keep all your accessories one colour, choose one of the two and keep the theme going throughout the whole look. When in doubt, wear black shoes, belt and bag. You can also use these methods in your category (warm, cool and neutral), just replace the bright colour with your group colours. Either wear similar colours and tones together from the same palette or go for the opposites in your group of colours. This even works for neutrals. An example would be : a pink pant and khaki top.
QUOTE OF THE DAY :
"Buy what you don't have yet,
or what you really want, which can be mixed with whatever you already own.
Buy only because something excites you,
not just for the simple
act of shopping"
