WHAT IS SMART CASUAL?:
Smart Casual is a style were you wear mainly casual pieces but add one or more formal parts to your outfit. Something that would normally NOT be paired with a casual outfit but it really matches in a strange way. One example is to wear a shiny silky dress with dad sneakers. Or a motor jacket with a very romantic prom-like dress. And there are heaps more sets that you can wear to pull this look off. It's all a matter of being brave and going against the grain.
It can be daunting, but if you do your research and find a look you like, it can be fun.
HOW TO ACHIEVE THIS LOOK?
The way to do it is to first find the formal piece you want to wear. The next thing to do is to see what you want to pair it with, all the casual pieces you want. Lay a few things on the floor with it and then see or try out which one works best for you. It could be a silk top with a kaftan, or some denim shorts with a lace long-sleeve top. The list is endless, but it's up to you to find the things that speak to you.
A FEW EXAMPLES OF SOME VERY GENERAL SMART CASUAL OUTFITS:
The look doesn't have to be bold and daring, it can be very subdued if that sort of thing scares you. Some people don't like colour, but want to try something new in the way they wear something. This is for you if that's your type of thing. Since you already own things you love, or may not have worn yet, or for a while, why not try to mix things up. They are your clothes for a reason, find new ways to wear the same things you already have and this might inspire you to wear the same thing a few different ways.
Just think of this look as if you were at a beach wedding and you were wearing a beautiful gown. Say it got really cold all of a sudden and you borrowed a long woolly cardigan from someone. This is the look you want and are going for. The dressy with the casual. It can really work in your favour if you think of different scenarios like this one. Or the opposite, you are out for coffee with a friend wearing jeans and end up at a formal function, you borrow your friends blazer, now you have a smart casual outfit.
WHEN CAN YOU WEAR SMART CASUAL?:
Literally everywhere. There is no reason why you can't where smart casual anywhere you want. Unless the dress code specifies otherwise, smart casual is great for most occasions, especially when you don't know what the dress code is at a function or event. You could test some outfits out when you go somewhere low-key. The whole thing is to just try.
TIP: Google "Images of Smart Casual outfits for women" or go on Pinterest and look for similar images. Keep those images and try them out with your own clothes.
