MIXING PATTERNS

HOW TO MIX PATTERNS :

Mixing patterns is an art. This is something not many people know how to do well. One way is to eyeball it and see what your own eye likes. But the best way to do it is to learn the professional formula which will work for you every time. Make sure one pattern is bold and the second one is not so bold, it needs to be a small patterned styled fabric. Colours make a huge difference too. You need one bright and one dull. Or if you use black and white that works too, you can use it in both top and bottom and then add a colour like red or yellow for the shoes.

HOW TO USE A PATTERN TO MATCH AN OUTFIT :

When you get a floral top and have no idea how to dress the rest of the outfit, this tip will save you every time. Get ONE colour from the floral top (or pant or skirt) and use it again in the skirt or pant or tights you want to wear. Without matching a colour from the floral top , it will be out of place and look really awkward. Or when in doubt, go for plain black pants with a patterned top.

WHEN TO WEAR MIXED PATTERNS :

The best time to wear mixed patterns is in casual settings, try them out in casual places so you can feel comfortable getting used to them and until you feel comfortable to try them at work, at formal settings and then anywhere you want.

WHERE TO WEAR MIXED PATTERNS :

You can wear mixed patterns going to the shops, to your friends house, to fun activities or classes you take up. For eg: art lessons, yoga, gym, photography lessons, Tafe, Uni, swimming pools, wood working classes/groups, coffee catch ups, meetings, bike riding, at the art gallery, at museums, at the movies, and really anywhere you want.

WHAT IF YOU WANT TO WEAR TWO OR MORE PATTERNS TOGETHER? :

This is the most fun way to be bold without looking like a freak. If you do it well it can look amazing. You can pick any colour you want, but use the colour wheel to help you at first. And then look at the style, as in the the floral, stripe or psychedelic styles together or mixed.

TIP : A great way to start is to choose one patterned garment (a top, skirt or pant only) and then pair it with other plain garments so you can dip a toe into the realm of patterns. And patterns can be added to your colour palette, the one you worked out from my first few posts (cool, warm or neutral). And stick to it.
