THE BASICS/ESSENTIALS :
Without these your wardrobe pretty much falls apart.
These are the key pieces everyone needs in their wardrobe and unfortunately you will need to spend some money on them. The best thing to do is to buy all natural cotton fibre basics as they will last longer, feel better, they're better for you and look better too. And best of all, save you money in the long run.
WHAT YOU NEED :
The first and foremost thing to do is look in your wardrobe and see if you have the very basic t-shirts, of at least 5 colours : White, Black, Navy, Grey and a bright colour of your choice, eg: pink, yellow, green or red. Preferably with no logos or prints on them.
Once you have filled the gap of plain t-shirt, then you can move on to the logos and printed ones as extras. No need to overdo it. Start small and your collection will grow over time. You might even start to love them, like I do. You can move on to the stripes and the colourful ones right after that.
For winter you will need a similar amount but in long sleeved. The same rules apply in the colder months as the basics cover your needs to fill in the gaps where you need something plain to wear with your clothing. Go for : White, Black, Navy, Green, Pink. Or whatever suits your wardrobe.
WHAT ABOUT THE PANTS? :
Yes, the rest of the wardrobe is just as essential to fill in. Let's start with the pants, especially for those who work in an office. You will need at least 3 non-stretch pants that are not jeans. You will need : a black pair, a navy pair and a dark green or dark brown pair (or go with the colours of your colour palette we discussed in the previous posts).
An assortment of pants in different styles is exactly what you need if you are stuck on what to wear, even if you don't work in an office. There are many styles, you can go for such as a cargo pant, chinos, straight legged, bell bottoms, skinny, baggy, the list is long. Just check out the list below for some inspiration and try something new out.
I LOVE SKIRTS BUT I NEVER WEAR THEM :
Why most women don't wear skirts is because they feel uncomfortable in them or never find what to wear with them. I don't know about you, but for me I would rather wear comfy pants, most of the time. Once you know what to pair with a skirt it will be a huge revelation. This is exactly why we need the basic t-shirt in our wardrobe. To pair the basic top with any fancy or plain skirt, you own and love. Or the opposite, to wear a fancy top with a very plain skirt. I will get into this a bit more in my next few posts. Balancing your clothes is an essential to learn. It is all about balancing the colours, the style and the fit.
Depending on your personal style and body shape, a skirt should represent the cut that suits both those needs. You can get them in : Mini, Midi, or Maxi (and everything in between). It should also be appropriate to the place you are wearing it, consider the weather and how long in the day you will be wearing it for. But most of all, what type of impression you want to give. Remember, classy isn't boring.
OUTER WEAR :
Jackets, blazers and coats are are the most personal part of your outfit. This expresses the style you rock on a daily basis. The colour, the style, the fit and the length will determine the longevity of that piece. If it is a fashion piece it will last a season on two, whereas if it is a classic it will last for many years to come. But also, does it suit your body and colour palette? Does it suit all your clothes and style?
The three categories I like to put them in are :
1) Fashionable.
2) Personal Style.
3) Classics.
And they come in different levels : casual, semi-formal and formal.
TIP : Try everything once, even if you feel out of your comfort zone. At least this way you will have your own opinion on it. And if you don't like something, don't do or buy it again. The more things you can cross off your list, the more you will be confident in your choices.
QUOTE OF THE DAY : "I think there is beauty in everything.
What 'normal' people perceive as ugly.
I can usually see something of beauty
in it"
